On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
