The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
