"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: I also longs to be Haim's fourth member. And we're far from alone. Multiple famous fans have openly coveted the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently show them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to start a band."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Award Nod

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent resilience demanded a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet the sister act will forever be their top commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
