Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him admitted that the club had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
